- One and a half cups of milk
- Two teaspoons of black pepper
- Two and a half cups of all-purpose flour
- Two large eggs
- Two tablespoons of salt for cooking and more for sprinkling
- Four pounds skin-on bone-in chicken pieces
- Vegetable oil
Get all these ingredients, and follow the steps given below to make your favorite fried chicken. In addition to these ingredients, you will need a medium-sized bowl, resealable plastic food storage bag, slotted spoon, paper towels, and a few other tools. All these things will be available in your kitchen, and you can confidently go ahead.
How to Make Southern Fried Chicken
Step One
Get all the ingredients mentioned above and preheat your oven to 200 F. Take a rack and place it in a large baking pan. Now, you will have to mix the ingredients. You will need a medium bowl to combine eggs and milk. Mix the blend well and whisk it.
Step Two
Take the large heavy-duty resealable plastic food storage bag and mix flour, pepper, and two tablespoons of salt. Seal the bag and shake it well to mix all the ingredients.
Step Three
Now you will have to dip the chicken pieces in the mixture you have prepared with egg and milk. Dip the chicken pieces and wait until all excess liquid drips off into that bowl. After removing the excess liquid, you can arrange the pieces on a plate. Dip the pieces one by one and remove the extra liquid. Keep four to five chicken pieces on that plate.
Step Four
Chicken pieces are now a bit dry since the liquid is not dripping, and you can add them to the bag where you have the mix of flour, pepper, and salt. Add the chicken to the flour and seal the bag. You will have to shake the bag thoroughly. It will help chickens to get a coating of flour.
Step Five
Once the chickens have a flour mix coating, you can remove them to a plate. You will have to follow the same procedure for all the chicken pieces. Dip the chickens in egg and milk mix, remove them from the mix, eliminate excess liquid, and add them to the flour. It will not take more than a couple of minutes. After going through this step, you need to fry your chicken pieces.
Step Six
Get vegetable oil and heat it in a heavy and deep skillet to 350 F. While waiting for the oil to boil, you can get a large serving plate. Keep the plate aside and use paper towels on it.
Step Seven
Check the oil and add chicken pieces when the oil is boiling. Fry each side of the chicken for about ten minutes or until it becomes golden brown. Cook chicken pieces thoroughly. While frying, you can avoid adding too many chicken pieces at once. Add only a few to ensure easy frying. If you add too many, the oil temperature will drop dramatically. It will affect the crispness of the chicken, and you might not enjoy it the most. Also, dark meat pieces will take more time than chicken breasts.
Step Eight
Take a slotted spoon, move the cooked chickens onto the paper towel lined on the plate, and sprinkle salt on the cooked chickens immediately.
Now your delicious and crispy chicken is ready. You can transfer your fried chicken to the rack mentioned in the first step. Keep the classic southern fried chicken warm in a preheated oven and fry the subsequent batches. You need to fry three to four based on the pan size.
How to Store
You can also store the leftover chicken and enjoy it whenever you want. However, you should avoid refrigerating hot chickens. Instead, allow chickens to cool and then wrap the cold fried chickens in paper towels and place them in a paper bag. If you do so, it will keep the coating crisp. Whenever you want to eat, you can reheat your chickens. Take the chickens out of the fridge and bring them to room temperature. Heat your oven to 400 F and keep the chicken pieces on a baking sheet. Bake them for around twenty minutes to get the desired crispness.

Additional Tips
You can use any other suitable frying oil if you do not prefer vegetable oil. Also, you can replace milk with buttermilk. You can marinade your chickens for around six hours if your time allows it. It will make the chicken juicy, and it can get a better flour coating. You can replace pepper and salt with a seasoned salt blend and add more seasonings to the flour.
