Cleaning a Wood Cutting Board With Lemon and Salt


  • Quarter lemon

  • Kosher salt

  • Scraper for the bench

  • Warm water

  • A sponge or a cloth

Cleaning your cutting boards with lemon and salt once a month is an excellent method to keep them in good condition.

- To begin, season the board with coarse salts, such as sea salt or kosher salt.
- Cut a lemon in half and set it aside. Using the fleshy side of the lemon, scrub the salt along either edge of the cutting board.
- Allow the salt and lemon solution to rest for about five minutes. Finally, use a sponge to wipe the board, then rinse and dry it off.

    Cleaning a Wood Cutting Board With Vinegar and Salt


    • Vinegar

    1.To begin, season the board with coarse salts, such as sea salt or kosher salt.

    2.Remove any food remains from the cutting board using warm water and soapy solution.

    3.Allow the cutting board to dry completely before beginning the next step. Pour vinegar on top of the board until it covers all sides of it. Let sit for five minutes, then wipe off excess liquid with a clean towel to avoid discoloring the wood surface.

    4.If there are still stains left, repeat the process using a new towel section each time until they're removed.

    5.Use the same method as above to remove stubborn food residue, but wipe the board down with a damp rag instead of using vinegar. If you need to sanitize your cutting boards, mix one teaspoon of bleach into a gallon of warm water and soak for up to 3 minutes before rinsing and drying.

    6.Wash wooden cutting boards by hand with mild dish soap and water. Be sure to use a sponge or soft brush that won't dull the surface of the wood or leave streaks. Then rinse thoroughly with water.

      Dish soap with bleach cleaners is good for sanitizing cutting boards after being used in the kitchen. This is an easy method to follow when cleaning a wood cutting board.

      The following steps are needed.

      1.Rinse the wood cutting board with warm water to clean off all food debris. Apply a few drops of dishwashing liquid on top of the table, lightly rubbing it into the surface. Let the cleaning solution soak into the cutting board for a few minutes before proceeding to step.

      2.If scrubbing is needed, use a toothbrush or soft-bristle brush to do so lightly and carefully. Wipe off any excess dishwashing liquid with a clean cloth removing as much of it as possible.

      3.Add 1/3 cup Clorox Cleanup Gel and 3/4 cups vinegar to a spray bottle, then fill in the rest of the way with water (1 gallon).

      4.Shake vigorously every time you are refilling the bottle until contents are well-mixed, spraying on both sides of the table, and let sit for 10 minutes before wiping off excess product with a sponge or rag, making sure not to leave streaks on the surface of the wood.

      5.Rinse cutting board immediately with water and wipe off with clean cloth being sure to dry immediately to avoid water damage. Sanitize by letting it soak using a Lysol product that is chlorine-free or first soaking in bleach mixture before rinsing thoroughly with warm water and drying.

        Cleaning a Wood Cutting Board With Lye Soap

        Equipment Needed:

        • One gallon of hot water in a large plastic container

        • 1 cup of lye soap

        • Gloves (optional)

        • Paper towels or old rag cloths for wiping away soapy solution after cleaning has taken place if desired.

        • Potholder/glove for handling hot cutting board during the cleaning process, if desired.

        There are different types of lye soap; if you have a choice between using a powdered form or the liquid form, it is recommended that you use the powdered variety. Of course, this depends on how easy it is to obtain in your area.

        The following steps are needed:

        1.Rinse the cutting board with warm water and wipe dry with paper towels. If there is still food stuck onto the table's surface after wiping clean, give an additional scrubbing to the surface while wearing gloves for added protection from soapy solution.

        2.Apply 1/4 cup powdered lye soap into one-gallon hot water, then stir contents until dissolved completely, making sure not to inhale any fumes released from the mixture being created. Allow mixture to sit on the surface of the wood cutting board for 10 minutes.

        3.Clean off any debris left after soaking with paper towels or an old cloth rag. Dry the cutting board using cloth, then sanitize it by placing it in a sink filled with hot water and dishwashing liquid, making sure to soak for at least 20 minutes before rinsing off excess bleach solution thoroughly. Let air dry completely before use.
