I had read that Imarku makes good knives at sharp prices. When I saw this listing I immediately thought of my $95 Shun Classic parer. No doubt the Imarku\u2019s design and sleek Pakkawood handle is a nod to almighty Shun. See my photo for a direct comparion. Here are my more detailed impressions:In terms of out of the box sharpness, it is quite effective and did well with the initial tomato and paper slicing tests. The German-engineered 7Cr17Mov steel it uses is actually one level up and slightly harder in terms of Rockwell hardness than the heralded Wusthof Classic knives also made of German steel. However, I do constructively suggest that Imarku remove itsboasting when it states that the knife is \u201cstaggering 56+ on the Rockwell Harness scale which makes the knife twice as hard as other knives.\u201d That\u2019s not accurate. 56 is an average hardness for cutlery and not twice as hard as competing knives, even at this excellent price point.Comfort is very good with a larger handle than most paring knives yet I still found it enjoyable. What about keeping this value priced beauty sharp? Its 15 degree angle is an Asian standard used by Mac, Global and others. I'll use my Edgecraft 463 to keep it honed. If you do this once every several cooks, you will only very rarely need to use the left side more aggressive sharpening mode.In terms of the question about competing with Shun, I don\u2019t think it is truly meant to directly compete. Shun, like many Japanses knives uses a very hard steel (60-61 on Rockwell scale). Harder means that Shun\u2019s VG-10 steel has to be honed less often, yet it also makes it brittle. The Imarku is perfectly capable of being razor sharp if you hone regularly and take good care of it. Hand wash only, of course. This is a five star knife for value and a four star for quality. I score it a very respecable four overall yet sure hope the audacious \u201cstaggering\u201d claims are edited out as they are not needed.I hope this too long review has been of some small help.
